A question arose today on the forums about what would happen with regards to where the data is placed in the archive if client driven PST migration is used but without the option set to create shortcuts.
I tested this as follows:
The above shows my user, with a few items in a PST called MyData. You can see some is in the inbox, and a subfolder, and some in another top level folder.
The above shows my PST policy, and that no shortcuts will be created.
Once PST migration starts, the PST file is shown in the Vault Admin Console, as shown above.
The import doesn’t take long, and Outlook gets cleaned up.
Since there are no shortcuts, you will only be able to see the data structure in either Virtual Vault, or Archive Explorer. I have shown Archive Explorer here.
The net result then is that the data is imported in to the archive in the ‘correct’ location.. not just in the Inbox, or at the Top of the Information Store.
