An issue that actually cropped up several weeks ago was brought to my attention again the other day by a colleague, and then again about a day later by a former colleague. That to me means it’s time to write a blog post about it !

The Problem

The issue is that the Enterprise Vault 9.0.3 server when it synchronises the mailbox/desktop policies to the hidden message, which the Outlook add-in then uses, indicates that the server version is 10.00.

A client trace will show the following on a 9.0.2 server:

25/04/2012 18:47:40.220[1088][H]:     POLICYENTRYID = 1170631E37714FD4092E234FA5FCEB96B1012700ev1a.EV.Local
25/04/2012 18:47:40.221[1088][H]:     PSTIMPORTENABLED = 1
25/04/2012 18:47:40.222[1088][H]:     PSTPOLICYENTRYID = 107190DE0318D8445AED9E5AE4FDDF6441012700ev1a.EV.Local

25/04/2012 18:47:40.228[1088][H]:     SERVERVERSION = 9.02

25/04/2012 18:47:40.230[1088][H]:     SYSTEMMAILBOX = SMTP:EnterpriseVaultEXCH1@EV.Local
25/04/2012 18:47:40.231[1088][H]:     USEINACTIVITYPERIOD = 1
25/04/2012 18:47:40.232[1088][H]:     USELARGEITEMSSIZE = 0
25/04/2012 18:47:40.233[1088][H]:     USEQUOTALIMIT = 0

25/04/2012 18:47:40.235[1088][H]:     VVENABLED = 1

And when upgraded to 9.0.3 Server:

09/05/2012 11:41:46.214[3252][H]:     PSTIMPORTENABLED = 1
09/05/2012 11:41:46.214[3252][H]:     PSTPOLICYENTRYID = 107190DE0318D8445AED9E5AE4FDDF6441012700ev1a.EV.Local
09/05/2012 11:41:46.215[3252][H]:     RPCOVERHTTPPROXYURL = http://fe.ev.local/enterprisevault
09/05/2012 11:41:46.218[3252][H]:     RPCOVERHTTPRESTRICTIONS = 0
09/05/2012 11:41:46.219[3252][H]:     SERVERVERSION = 10.00
09/05/2012 11:41:46.219[3252][H]:     SITEENTRYID = 103E22A68CAD1C7499C66799D1177FE741d10000ev1a.EV.Local
09/05/2012 11:41:46.221[3252][H]:     SYSTEMMAILBOX = SMTP:EnterpriseVaultEXCH1@EV.Local
09/05/2012 11:41:46.222[3252][H]:     USEINACTIVITYPERIOD = 1
09/05/2012 11:41:46.223[3252][H]:     USELARGEITEMSSIZE = 0
09/05/2012 11:41:46.223[3252][H]:     USEQUOTALIMIT = 0
09/05/2012 11:41:46.224[3252][H]:     USERSCANDELETEITEMS = 1
09/05/2012 11:41:46.225[3252][H]:     USESELFINSTALLFUNCT = 0
09/05/2012 11:41:46.226[3252][H]:     VVENABLED = 1

The issue is that the client checks, on startup, compares the server version with the client version.  An EV 8 client can’t talk to an EV 10 server (well, I mean it *can* but it isn’t supported) and so the EV 8 client talking to THIS server will start to downgrade various pieces of functionality.  For example Virtual Vault will be in read-only mode.

The Solutions

There are a few…You could upgrade the clients to 9.0.3 or later, or you could wait for Enterprise Vault 9.0.4
