I saw a question on these very forums that I dug into in a little bit of detail.  The question :-

Does the 9.0.3 Outlook Addin contain all the fixes that were in the 9.0.2.1185 build?

The short answer is Yes.

The longer answer is :

Etrack 2319858:

End users lose the ability to search Virtual Vault from Outlook Windows Instant Search.  Several issues were resolved as part of this Etrack:
1. When a user has performed an initial vault cache synchronisation and Virtual Vault is in use, the archived items in the cache can be found using Outlook instant search. Some time later Outlook instant search is no longer able to find the cached archived items using the same search terms that previously worked. Most often this change in behaviour has been observed after an archived item was opened via a shortcut or via Virtual Vault.
2. Rebuilding a WDS index causes duplicate items for search results in Virtual Vault.
3. Retrieving specific items through virtual vault cause Outlook to crash.

>> Yes.  In the Updates_en.htm

Users lost the ability to search Virtual Vault from Outlook Instant Search [Ref 9039332, E2401372]

Users who had Virtual Vault enabled could sometimes lose the ability to search Virtual Vault from Outlook Instant Search. At first, Outlook Instant Search found archived items, but some time later it could not find them, even when the user entered the same search terms. Typically, the issue occurred after the user opened an archived item from a shortcut or from Virtual Vault.

This has been fixed.

Etrack 2378286:

Outlook 2003 crashes : Faulting module desktopcommon.dll during EVMSPConfig::GetProfileUID
If the PR_SERVICE_UID value is missing from the client’s default Outlook profile registry key the Enterprise Vault Outlook client fails to load.

>> Yes.  In Updates_en.htm

Outlook Add-In failed to load if PR_SERVICE_UID was missing [Ref 9038741, E2291986]

The Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-In failed to load if the PR_SERVICE_UID value was missing from the client’s default Outlook profile registry key.

This has been fixed.

Etrack 2321458:

Retrieving specific items from Virtual Vault causes Outlook to crash.
Attempting to open certain items through Virtual Vault causes outlook to crash. This issue occured due to the fact that when we opened these items a particular MAPI property type was being set to "unspecified", when Outlook was expecting a string value.

>> Yes.  In Updates_en.htm

Custom MAPI properties in archived items could cause Virtual Vault to fail [Ref 9038596, E2321458]

Archived items that had custom MAPI properties with unexpected value types could cause Virtual Vault to fail when opened from Virtual Vault.

This has been fixed.

Etrack 2355902:

Outlook 2003 hangs indefinitely on closure due to open VC threads not being closed when multiple add-ins are present.
When Outlook was shut down whilst Vault Cache was still initializing, in some environments the Outlook process took longer than expected to close.

>> Yes.  In Updates_en.htm

Outlook process could persist after user closed Outlook [Ref 9039117, E2386893]

In some circumstances, the Outlook.exe process could persist for up to 30 seconds after the user closed Outlook. For example, this happened when the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-Ins could not contact the Enterprise Vault server.

This has been fixed.

Etrack 2409952:

Unnecessary permissions checks and sync storm issue
1. Unnecessary permissions checks are made when performing a Vault Cache synchronization.
2. When a large number of users who have all missed their last scheduled Vault Cache synchronization open Outlook within a small timeframe, a large number of concurrent synchronization requests may occur, which could lead to contention for synchronisation slots on the Enterprise Vault server.

>> Yes.  In updates_en.htm,

New registry setting allows Outlook Add-Ins to ignore missed Vault Cache synchronizations [Ref 9039059, E2350514]

By default, the Outlook Add-Ins initiate a Vault Cache synchronization soon after the user starts Outlook, if a scheduled Vault Cache synchronization has been missed. If you enable the new registry setting, OVAllowMissedMDCSyncOnStartup, then the Add-Ins do not initiate a synchronization until the next scheduled synchronization time after the user starts Outlook.

You can use this setting to alleviate synchronization slot and SQL Server contention issues. These can occur if a large number of users, who have missed a scheduled synchronization, all start Outlook within a short timeframe.

For details of the registry setting, see the Outlook Add-Ins chapter in the Registry Values manual.

Virtual Vault changes for third-party Outlook integration
Some third-party Outlook Add-Ins need to be able to temporarily modify retrieved items opened through Virtual Vault.

Virtual Vault now supports items that are encrypted using Entrust® [Ref 9039807, 90310725, E2421548, E2557282, E2557288]

In earlier releases, archived items that were encrypted using Entrust® Entelligence Security Provider 9.x could not be displayed when retrieved from Virtual Vault.

To remove this limitation, install the following software on Enterprise Vault users’ computers:

    Enterprise Vault 9.0.3 Outlook Add-In.
Entrust Entelligence Security Provider 9.x beta hotfix. This hotfix can be obtained from Entrust®.

WDS architecture changes to support 64 bit OS with 32 bit MAPI

>> Yes.  In update_en.htm,

Windows Search indexing of Vault Cache is supported for 64-bit Windows/32-bit Microsoft Office [Ref 9038976]

In Enterprise Vault 9.0.1/9.0.2, where 64-bit Windows was combined with 32-bit Microsoft Office, Enterprise Vault did not enable Windows Search to index the full content of items in Vault Cache. Windows Search only indexed the header information.

In Enterprise Vault 9.0.3, Windows Search indexing of the full content of items in Vault Cache is supported for the following:

64-bit Windows and 32-bit Microsoft Office (new in Enterprise Vault 9.0.3)
64-bit Windows and 64-bit Microsoft Office (unchanged from Enterprise Vault 9.0.1/9.0.2)

  1. Hi,
First of all, thanks for all your updates i found very usefull for all !
I had a question related to 9.0.3 client, is there a direct link inside a support post to download only client instead of full product ? ( like there was for 9.0.2.b1185) ?
    I wasn’t able to found any 🙁

    Regards,

    • No, you need to download from FileConnect the full media kit.

The 9.0.2 build you refernce is a client hot fix. If / when one becomes available following base 9.0.3 then that will be available as a separate download.

      Hope that helps.

  2. Great article.. I was wondering if EV 9.0.3 client installed on user machine(which has windows 7 OS and outlook 2010 SP1) is compatible with EV server 8.0 SP4 or not.

    • Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Yes it is compatible. The clients are usually +1 / -1 when it comes to server version. So the 9.0.3 client will work with an EV 8 server.

For it to work you’ll need an EV 8 hotfix, http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH141575. That needs to be applied on your server.

  3. Great, that’s what I was looking for. Thanks 🙂

  4. You’re welcome.
