Another great little way of monitoring what’s happening when you are checking out what might be wrong with synchronising/building Vault Cache is VCView.

Open your favourite browser and go to http://ev-server-name/EnterpriseVault/VCView.aspx

You’ll see a page like this :

vcview

At this current stage, if you do BITSADMIN /LIST /VERBOSE you will see the job to download that file exists, eg

BITSADMIN version 3.0 [ 7.5.7600 ]
BITS administration utility.
(C) Copyright 2000-2006 Microsoft Corp.

BITSAdmin is deprecated and is not guaranteed to be available in future versions of Windows.
Administrative tools for the BITS service are now provided by BITS PowerShell cmdlets.

But you can see :-

a/ It’s suspended

b/ It’s an unknown size in Bytes

c/ If you check in the OVROOT folder on disk, you’ll see a file named something like BIT1F8D.tmp, and it’ll be 0 bytes.

Once it has been built it will move in to the list of Completed jobs at the bottom of the screenshot.

A few minutes later your Outlook Add-in will pick up on the fact that it’s completed and it’ll move to the downloading stage :

vcview3

If you have you client trace set to INFORMATION, you’ll see things like this :

The BYTES part should keep moving upwards.  The file size of the .TMP file on disk won’t, it’ll be whatever the total bytes should be at the end, eg 166609920.

  1. I believe you need to be opening this page while being logged in as VSA?
    Regards,
    Gertjan

    • Actually no.. it picks “who you are”, so you need to launch it from the client machine, where you’re doing your testing from, as the user you’re doing your testing with. HTH
