During the day today I’ve been happily rebuilding my Vault Cache, following a Vault Cache reset that I initiated.  That is I was happily rebuilding it until I left the office, and connected again using VPN.

Now the current .DB file which is being downloading keeps “hanging”, either literally doing nothing, or throwing a transient error.  I only spotted it because I’m waiting for the last 200,000 items in my Vault Cache to download for a different test.

I’m using Windows 7 x64, so using BITSADMIN I can see the state of the job as follows :

BITSADMIN /LIST /VERBOSE

BITSADMIN version 3.0 [ 7.5.7600 ]
BITS administration utility.
(C) Copyright 2000-2006 Microsoft Corp.

BITSAdmin is deprecated and is not guaranteed to be available in future versions of Windows.
Administrative tools for the BITS service are now provided by BITS PowerShell cmdlets.

I just don’t seem to be getting any progress at time.

I managed to suspend and resume the download using :

bitsadmin /suspend {6A555835-61DA-4D5C-8659-F5DC0983155A}
bitsadmin /resume {6A555835-61DA-4D5C-8659-F5DC0983155A}

But again after a few minutes the same thing would happen.  I couldn’t spot anything obviously wrong with my connection, and the VPN state seems to be steady.

So after bouncing around some ideas, I built this little script.

:beginning
bitsadmin /suspend {6A555835-61DA-4D5C-8659-F5DC0983155A}
choice /C:AB /D:A /T:2 > NUL
bitsadmin /resume {6A555835-61DA-4D5C-8659-F5DC0983155A}
choice /C:AB /D:A /T:25 > NUL
goto beginning

I’ve got that running in one DOS window, and BITSADMIN /MONITOR /REFRESH 1 in another.  Now things are happy again!
