I discovered today that on my shiney desktop machine at home that Windows Update appears to have gone loopy. By that I mean it’s gone mad!  It installs some updates on shutdown, then when you start it back up again and you get to the final stage of the boot process where it sometimes goes to “Configuring Updates”, it goes to that far, sits there for 5-10 minutes, and then undoes “something”, and brings up the desktop window.  I say it undoes “something” because it happens to quickly to see.

Oh well, luckily I found these two helpful articles :

Stop Hijacking the shutdown button

How to read a Windows Update log

The first of those I’ve done now.. just to get me going again with out a 15 minute boot up time!  The second of those I’m saving for a rainy day sometime in the near future.  I will see if I can work out what’s causing the looping, and sort it out.
